Nestled in the heart of the Carpathians, in the vibrant region of Kosiv, GUSHKA not only crafts products but also spins a narrative deeply rooted in centuries-old traditions, as rich and textured as the wool they meticulously mold. Founded in 2016, this Ukrainian brand upholds ancient wool crafting traditions, inviting its patrons to experience the profound depth of Ukrainian heritage. Beyond just tradition, GUSHKA specializes in producing woolen clothing, pillows, and bedspreads. Each item is sustainably made from 100% pure, eco-friendly wool, sourced directly from Ukrainian sheep that roam the untouched meadows of the Carpathian Mountains.
Gushka is a Ukrainian brand of woolen products that popularizes ancient craftsmanship and makes one fall in love with Ukrainian traditions. Its journey begins in 2016 in the pastures of Hutsulshchyna, a region in the Carpathians, where sheep aren’t just livestock, but revered family members. Cared for with passion and devotion, their wool tells tales of long mountain nights and the hands that have shepherded them through generations.
Mission
GUSHKA is not a mere exotic tale from the Carpathians. They don’t build myths, but rather present the genuine, everyday life built around the nuances of mountain living. It's a life found in many regions of Ukraine, but here, in GUSHKA’s story, it's about the sheep, the warmth, and the homes they touch. Their focus has always been on reviving the local Carpathian crafts, bringing them to modern-day relevance. The brand recognized the potential of transforming wool weaving—a craft deeply rooted in sheep farming—into a social enterprise. Central to the brand's ethos are the people who work with GUSHKA. They are the heartbeat of the brand, shaping its identity and legacy.
The brand holds family values close to its core, a testament to this being that two of its founders are a loving couple. GUSHKA is a place where every thread tells a story, every product carries an emotion, and every purchase is a step back into a world where craft meets comfort, and people are celebrated for their dedication and passion.
Backstory & Selection
When the married couple and founders, Oleg Lukaniuk and Daryna Furmaniuk, envisioned a brand that would encapsulate the spirit of the Carpathians, they reached out to Lyubov Rybenchuk, their neighbor and a professional weaver in the third generation. Under her guidance, they began with workshops for novices and welcomed everyone willing to learn. As time went on, GUSHKA expanded horizons by hiring experienced weavers and scaling their production.
The brand presents its seasonless catalog and has presented three drops: Lis, Guk, and Traditional — woolen pieces that are inspired by nature and also reflect Ukrainian traditional patterns that have been used since time immemorial. Among their products, Gushka creates woolen clothing, pillows, carpets, rugs, and bedspreads.
Every GUSHKA creation tells a story, often stretching back three or four generations. The legacy of their artisans traces back to their ancestors—shepherds who grazed sheep high in the mountains, and craftswomen who wove blankets for their families on the very looms that are still used today. Observing GUSHKA’s craftsmen at work is like taking a step back in time; their daily tales are worthy of being chronicled and shared with the world. Above all, their wisdom and expertise are treasures to be cherished and passed down.
Production
Shearing sheep is a pivotal annual event, conducted as winter concludes. Once sheared, the wool is diligently cleaned, removing impurities like dirt and natural oils, with the valuable byproduct lanolin often utilized in beauty products. The wool is then carded, transforming its naturally curly fibers into aligned, soft, and fluffy sheets. These sheets, or rovings, are then spun into yarn, using a wheel to intertwine strands together. Depending on the method, the yarn can be fine, suited for elegant garments, or thicker, ideal for knitting. The versatile wool is then woven into fabrics, dyed, and crafted into a myriad of products that Gushka creates.
While their techniques are deeply rooted in tradition, the designs cater to contemporary tastes. Each GUSHKA product, crafted over 1-10 days, balances the practical with the emotional, ensuring every piece is not just functional, but also a bearer of sentiment.
The world changed with crises like COVID, the ongoing war, and more, but the essence of GUSHKA remained steadfast. Brand’s creations became more than just products; they became symbols of warmth, comfort, and resilience. Through home confinement and harsh winters, GUSHKA has been a comforting embrace to many.
Over three years, they've transformed 6600 kg of wool into 3600 m2 of cherished products. But it's not about numbers for the team. Each product is an ode to the Carpathian way of life, where sheep, cheese, hills, and the perennial need for warmth and comfort dictate the rhythm of life.
